‘A just ecological transition is inclusive and leaves no one behind,’ declared Marina Silva, Brazil’s combative Minister of the Environment and Climate, at the opening of COP30, the climate negotiations currently underway in Belém. The transition has always had to confront social issues and has demanded governance capable of understanding and implementing efforts to transform our economy and society.

Today, however, it is essential for businesses, institutions and territories to adopt an integrated ESG strategy that captures the state of the art and uses analysis and assessment to improve their environmental, social and governance performance. In an era of political and social polarisation, we need to defend a gentle vision of doing business and managing territories, that does not lose sight of all the efforts that the best part of our society has made over the last eighty years: sustainable development and the SDGs; the United Nations and the defence of human rights; trade unions and labour rights; social protection; environmentalism and civic solidarity; and development cooperation.

For this reason, Renewable Matter, together with Trentino Sviluppo, currently working to certify the entire province of Trentino according to ESG criteria, is launching The Social & Governance Observer. This channel will complement the publication's editorial offering by analysing the challenges of integrating social policies into the just transition, how companies and institutions are gearing up, what new models and metrics to apply, how the relevant legislation is changing, what the most interesting and innovative case studies are in terms of governance, and what good practices for transparent corporate management exist.

On a monthly basis, we will provide in-depth analysis via our website and joint LinkedIn channels, with content tailored to professionals, featuring the trademark quality of Renewable Matter content and the bylines of all our contributors, coordinated by Maria Carla Rota. The purpose is to provide real-world examples and talking points for all organisations working increasingly on these issues, with the goal of ensuring a just transition.

Renewable Matter has always considered the social dimension and the importance of good governance in its journalism dedicated to the daily challenges of the economic world, committed to reducing its impact. With The Social & Governance Observer, we wish to further refine our analysis and make a concrete contribution to the pursuit of the goals that are close to all our hearts: prosperity, peace and development in harmony with people and the planet.
