The second edition of the International Conference on Bioenergy & Bioeconomy (IBBC 2026) will take place from 28 to 30 October 2026 at the University of Seville. The event is organised by the Institute of Biorefineries Research in collaboration with the university’s Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. The first edition was held in Lisbon in 2025. The conference brings together researchers, companies and investors working in the circular bioeconomy, from biofuels and biorefineries to biomass-based chemicals.

The programme is structured around three parallel tracks. The academic track will focus on biomass feedstocks and their sustainability, pretreatment and fractionation for integrated value chains, catalysis and chemical conversion, and the integration of hydrogen and power-to-X.

The academic-industry track will cover biochemical conversion and biomanufacturing, thermochemical and hybrid conversion pathways, biomass-derived energy carriers, techno-economic studies for scale-up, life cycle assessment and ESG criteria, integrated biorefinery design, as well as digitalisation and artificial intelligence as decision-support tools.

The industrial track, meanwhile, will address supply chains and feedstock risk management, industrial-scale conversion technologies, finance and market policies, regional bioeconomy clusters and industrial symbiosis.

The scientific committee is chaired by Eulogio Castro and Encarnación Ruiz, both from the University of Jaén, one of the leading research institutions in the field of biorefineries. Speakers include Johanna Mossberg from Sweden’s RISE Research Institutes, Mohamed Pourkashanian from the University of Sheffield, Jukka Kantola from the World Bioeconomy Association, Stella Bezergianni from the Greek research centre CERTH, and Kristine Klavers from EcoEngineers, a US-based consultancy specialising in low-carbon fuel markets.

The industrial programme also features companies including BASF, Siemens Energy, Portuguese biofuel producer Prio Bio, Portuguese biotechnology company Arborea and Spanish company Carboliva.
