E-Safiri develops mobility infrastructure and electric vehicle battery replacement networks, offering public and private charging options, as well as refrigerated storage solutions. Recognised as an Innovator by the Earthshot Prize, the Kenyan company makes these solutions easily accessible via its mobile app, which allows drivers to locate charging stations, reserve a spot and manage payments.
The heart of the E-Safiri model is a network of battery charging and replacement hubs distributed in strategic, high-traffic areas in the city of Kisumu. Each station is equipped with automated battery swap lockers and charging points, integrated with a digital instant payment system. For customers in rural and peri-urban areas, reliability is guaranteed by solar-powered solutions, which enable continuity of service even in contexts where the electric grid is unstable. The experience is quick and standardised: batteries are replaced in a few seconds, and then users can get back on the road.
The battery-as-a-service (BAAS) formula makes access to electricity simple and convenient for motorcyclists, cyclists and delivery drivers. End-user costs are 200 Kenyan shillings or KES (approximately 1.3 euros) for battery replacement and 100 KES for charging.
E-Safiri has also launched a partnership programme with small local businesses that choose to host replacement stations, a model that allows retailers to generate additional earnings for each completed replacement. Private 3 kW charging solutions are designed to be installed in homes or offices.
The Kenyan company also offers complementary services linked to the cold chain, offering, at some charging hubs, blocks of ice generated using solar power, designed for use by fishers and sellers of perishable goods. Then there's the Baridi Box, an insulated container that can be loaded onto motorcycles or bicycles and allows the safe transportation of fish, meat, fruit and vegetables.
