The Atlantic Ocean has played an extremely important role in the history of Portugal. As a glorious nation of seafarers, to this day the Portuguese look at the ocean as a central component to the development of their bioeconomy. Water, together with forests and agriculture, is one of the fundamental elements with which the Portuguese government aims to grow an economy based on biological resources, in line with the European Union guidelines.
